Jerseys .... light years ahead
Our Club
The rich fertile plains of Victoria's Goulburn Valley, reaching from the Goulburn River to west of the Campaspe, is home to the members of the Northern District Jersey Breeders Club. Formed in 1944, with the Late Mr P J Maloney elected as President, many of today's families and bloodlines can be traced back to the foundation members and their animals. For many years the Victorian Autumn Fair, held in the northern region, was one of the premier Jersey events of the year, attracting entries from all areas of the State. Sponsored by the members of the NBJBC, the fair is now held in conjunction with the Great Northern Show at Rochester, each February. Whilst not the scale of former days, the Fair still attracts many quality exhibits and much camaraderie between exhibitors. Youth have always been encouraged and the handlers class is keenly contested each year. We have over the years conducted Judging and Classification field days, hosted international guests; held Christmas parties, bowling nights, Golf Days, and regularly invited neighbouring clubs in these events. Members of our Club have held positions on the Victorian Committee, and we currently have three of today's Classification Panel amongst our members. Recent times have seen our members face enormous challenges, with many reliant on irrigation water from the severely depleted Goulburn and Campaspe water storages. We are endeavouring to meet the demands placed on us, recognising the fact that all individual situations are unique and we have sought to support one another in our personal and business decisions. We have proven our resourcefulness and resilience in our planning, with an adapted approach to cattle nutrition and budgeting, and will undoubtedly take this knowledge and experience into the future.
