We milk 300 to 400 cows all year round. 40% Autumn calving. 60% Spring calving. 20% of the herd are registered Jerseys. The remainder are registered Holsteins and a few unregistered recipients. Jerseys and Holsteins are run as one herd except for 6 weeks at the end of A.I. in the summer when Jersey & Holstein bulls are run with their respective cows.

Feeding
We now grow annual pastures, lucerne, dryland crops & sometimes sorghum. May to September the milkers are mainly pasture fed & from October to April they receive a TMR.
Classification
1 X Sup; 2 X VHC91; 18 X VHC90; 19 X HC+; 3 X HC+86 (heifers); 7 X HC & 17 heifers unclassified.
The Farm
In 1993 Charles purchased the Rathbone Rd property & converted it from a summer cropping farm into a dairy farm. In 2004 the neighbouring property was bought and developed, making the total farm area now 380 hectares.
Breeding Program & Stud History
Carolyn’s grandparents successfully used bulls from Jersey Island and New Zealand. Carolyn’s parent’s continued to use New Zealand bulls and later on US & Canadian sires with great success. Charles’ grandfather established the ‘Andes’ Holstein Stud in the 1950s. It is of extreme importance that Jerseys are bred on this farm that are capable of competing with the large-framed, high-performance Holsteins that dominate the herd in number. Past & present bulls used include: Lester Sambo, Paramount, Flowerpower, Astound, Biestar, Malcolm and from NZ, Grandeur Good Omen & Ivanhoe Red Triumph.
